Operating System Independence

Use applications from MS Windows, UNIX, Linux, QNX, or other operating systems on one desktop. Users get access to these applications through desktop icons without knowing where the applications come from.

The Raydesk virtual desktop environment itself can be installed, for example, within a VMware virtual machine running on Linux, UNIX, Solaris, or other POSIX-compatible system.

How does it work?

MS Windows applications can be delivered to user desktops in three different ways, provided terminal services are available:

  • using the Microsoft native RDP protocol (Remote Desktop)
  • using the Citrix ICA protocol
  • using the X11 protocol as a frontend to MS Windows Server

UNIX, Linux, or Solaris applications are delivered using the native X11 protocol.

Java applications are platform independent and can be run as in any other environment.

For more advanced implementations, the browser window can be used. Applications are then accessed through Web Services (Sun Secure Global Desktop / Tarantela, Citrix, etc.)

Applications may be run on the same server as the Raydesk virtual desktop, or from within a virtual server (VMware or XEN). For maximum availability, more extensive implementations may call for running the applications on an independent server farm, separately from the Raydesk virtual desktop.
