Energy prices have risen by 11% in the Czech Republic in 2007. The trend of price level convergence within the EU indicates inevitability of a further rise. It has been proved the ICT industry's annual CO2 footprint is comparable to that of the aviation industry's. Massive costs of energy production are naturally reflected in IT policies and operation costs of today's businesses. Most modern managers and economists realise this.

"An office computer
consumes 1 490 kW hours
of energy annually which is almost EUR 155"

See documents in the download section. We will use a simple example to show that the purchase of IT equipment, namely of regular office PCs, represents only a fraction of the overall cost. According to a Gartner study, the power drain of an average office PC is about 180TáW. Current power management technologies (Energy Star) reduce the input to 100TáW. In both cases, the electrical a mechanical circuits inside the PC generate 50% higher consumption than necessary for the PC to function. The study also states that while today's costs cause energy prices to account for 10% of a company's IT budget, the rate will go up to 50% within a few years.
